The idea of composing "Hamburg Revisited" emerged in the course of the lectures on music and multimedia of Prof. Hajdu. In writing "Hamburg Revisited" the aspect of working with only partly pre-produced video material while at the same time being able to realize computer music with the more traditional concept of "live musicians" was a central interest of our ensemble. After choosing "impressions of Hamburg at different times of day" as the uniting topic of the piece every one of us set out with a DV-camera collecting material. For some of us this was the first filming experience. This was followed by extensive work with the video material resulting in a number of film clips which were to serve as the base for our composition. At the same time we designed sounds. Some of these came from the videos, some from recordings of our own compositions and some were recorded for this project or created from scratch. Most of the sounds underwent extensive sound-design treatment until they matched the sounds we composers imagined for our piece. Using these sound files we created the "instruments" you are going to hear in the concert. These are playable by computer keyboard. Then we wrote scores for these instruments as well as the video clips we produced. These scores contain detailed playing instructions - also on when improvisation is desired and to which extent. A very special aspect of the project was that the program was developed further while we were composing. If a composer had a certain idea he/she could present it to him and he would try to integrate it into the program when feasible. People familiar with computers may guess that as a result, part of the project time involved debugging new program components. Due to these circumstances performances of "Hamburg Revisited" always show a "status quo" as the composition will develop alongside with the program options and the general computer development. The last phase of the project consisted of musical and "visual" rehearsals - a sixth player was given the task of a live-video-manipulation according to a video score. Nathalie Herres |
