Five is one of John Cage's Number Pieces. It was written in 1988 and first performed at the Witten Festival für Neue Kammermusik. The piece is dedicated to the long-term editor of the WDR Dr. Brennecke.
Five can be performed by any set of five instruments provided they can sustain the sounds, as they need to be "brushed in" (as John Cage denotes). The player perform the score which only consists of five separate parts by freely choosing their entrances within certain "timebrackets." This makes Five an ideal piece for Internet performance.
